Art Works! began in the midst of a new era: The movie posters for the Metropolis were still painted by hand – with pencil, brush, and paint. Yet, soon enough, the first Apple Macintosh computer was installed in the Brahmsallee offices in Harvestehude, Hamburg. Using this, the requested catalogues could be printed at what was a rapid speed for that time. The edding company profited from this, as did the office cooperatives Büroring and Büro actuell. Alongside the catalogues, the young agency provided the full range of services – from advertising campaigns, displays and sales measures through to events with specialist office retailers all over Germany. Art Works! became an expert in the paper and stationery industry.

With Germany’s introduction of nursing care insurance in 1995, the agency was tasked with the exciting project of developing and implementing a comprehensive communication concept for all 28 nursing care institutions of the Ambulante Pflege der Diakonie (APDD). For eight years, Imke Rieken looked after APDD’s media, marketing and financial planning and kept a close eye on the budget – which was rather modest, given the size of the task. 

Art Works! has many customers with whom it has been associated with years and years: For more than ten years, the agency produced two specialist journals each month for the F2M publishing house – including the Russian and English-language versions. Since 1998 Art Works! has been developing Lufthansa Technik AG’s black and white newsletter Technik Connection into a wide-ranging customer magazine. We are still designing and managing it to this day. Our remit includes corporate design for Lufthansa Technik and its subsidiaries, as well as countless brochures, flyers, mail shots and much more. The resultant industry expertise was a key factor in winning other aviation customers – from Lufthansa and its subsidiaries to firms such as Globefuel, Bubeck and HelloJet.
 
After eight years of being based in the Port of Hamburg in the heart of the city, Art Works! then celebrated its 25th anniversary in Unterberg, the company’s current location. Privately, Imke and Jan-Peter Rieken have gone their separate ways, but they continue to be linked by joint projects for their customers. Since the beginning of 2016, Imke Rieken has been the sole managing director, continuing the Art Works! brand as an agency for communication and design.
